Highlights from our Colorado membership

2017:

  • Fight Crime: Invest in Kids opened the Colorado Office.
  • Arapahoe County Sheriff Michael McIntosh spoke at the National Conference of State Legislatures for Early Learning Fellows regarding the connection between early learning and criminal activity.

  • Fight Crime: Invest in Kids hosted two Cops and Clergy events with Shepherding the Next Generation and recruited new members to the organizations
  • Arapahoe County Sheriff Michael McIntosh met with Representative Susan Lontine to discuss the relationship between early childhood care and education and crime.
  • Colorado Fight Crime: Invest in Kids members signed a national sign-on letter to Members of Congress urging reauthorization of the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) program.
  • Six Fight Crime: Invest in Kids CO members signed a letter regarding support for HB17-1210 – School Discipline for Preschool through Second Grade.
  • Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock, Logan County Sheriff Brett Powelll, and Wheat Ridge Police Chief Daniel Brennan had a call with Senator Cory Gardner regarding concerns around opioids and Medicaid.
  • A report on Adverse Childhood Experiences was released by Sheriff Jeff Shrader of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
  • Sheriff Brett Powell wrote an op-ed regarding Medicaid and children’s health in the Sterling Journal Advocate.

2018:

  • Fight Crime: Invest in Kids held an opioid report release event with members D.A. George Brauchler, Aurora Police Chief Nicholas Metz, and Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith as speakers.

  • Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock and ReadyNation member, Jeff Wasden, signed a letter regarding P-12 Academic Standards which was sent to nine legislators.
  • Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith, Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock, Jefferson County Jeff Shrader, and El Paso County Bill Elder signed a Colorado non-member letter.
  • Colorado members signed a national sign-on letter on opioids to Members of Congress urging funding for evidence-based programs to help infants and toddlers.
  • Colorado members signed national sign-on letter to Members of Congress addressing the importance of afterschool programs to the prevention of juvenile delinquency.
  • Adams County Sheriff Michael McIntosh, Vail Police Department Chief Dwight Henninger, and County Sheriff’s of Colorado Executive Director Chris Johnson signed a Colorado non-member letter.

2019:

  • Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock wrote an op-ed regarding afterschool that published in the Denver Post.
  • Sixteen members signed a letter in support of HB 19-1194 – School Discipline for Preschool through Second Grade.
  • Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith, Jefferson County Jeff Shrader, Logan County Brett Powell, and El Paso County Bill Elder signed a Colorado non-member letter.

2020:

  • Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock hosted a census presentation for the County Sheriffs of Colorado.
  • Gilpin County Sheriff Kevin Armstrong, Grand County Brett Schroetlin, and Colonel Matthew Packard (CO State Patrol) participated in a national Story Time with Kids event via Facebook.
  • Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock participated in a Cops and Tots event, reading to Coyote Creek preschoolers via Google Hangouts, on two different days, which gained media attention on Fox News, Douglas County News-Press, Parker Chronicle, and Highlands Ranch Herald

  • Eleven CO members signed a national letter to reauthorize the JJDPA.
  • The CO office hosted an all-member meeting with Douglas County Undersheriff Holly Nicholson-Kluth as a guest speaker. We were also joined by State Representative, Kim Ransom for the meeting.

  • Englewood Police Department Chief John Collins and Vail Police Department Dwight Henninger signed a Colorado non-member letter.

2021:

  • Twenty-six Colorado members signed a national letter supporting trauma-informed care initiatives.
  • Recruited 15 members to date.
  • Former District Attorney George Brauchler, Vail Police Department Chief Dwight Henninger, and Logan County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff Brett Powell signed a Colorado non-member letter.
  • Vail Police Department Chief Dwight Henninger participated as a panelist for the Fight Crime: Invest in Kids 25th Anniversary pre-K report release.
